The power of peace: practicing non-violence in school & beyond

10 Oct 2025

Every year, on October 2, the world pauses to remember Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of our Nation, whose life became a message to humanity - that true strength lies not in force, but in peace, patience, and non-violence. The International Day of Non-Violence is more than a tribute; it is a call to live by the values that build harmony in our classrooms, homes, and communities.

In schools, non-violence begins in the smallest of moments - a kind word instead of a harsh one, a helping hand instead of a push, an apology instead of anger. It is in how we treat our classmates, our teachers, and even ourselves. A non-violent environment is not just free from fights or bullying; it is filled with respect, empathy, and understanding. It is a place where every student feels safe to express, learn, and grow.

But the spirit of non-violence does not stop at the school gate. Outside, it extends to our families, our friends, and the world we live in. It is seen when we resolve differences through dialogue, when we respect others’ opinions, and when we choose kindness over cruelty, both in person and online. In today’s digital world, practicing non-violence also means spreading positivity, avoiding hurtful comments, and standing up against cyberbullying.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind.” When we live by this principle, we not only build peaceful schools but also a peaceful world. As students, we hold the power to shape the future - a future where compassion is stronger than conflict, and love louder than hate.
This International Day of Non-Violence, let us take a pledge: to be gentle in words, firm in values, and peaceful in actions. Because the path to a better world begins with the peace we create - within ourselves and around us.

Let’s make every classroom a garden of peace and every heart a home of kindness.
